Comparing markets and products

Two ways to compare: markets against each other, and one product against another inside a market.

Most questions in JustRanks are comparative. There are two tools for it, and they answer different questions.

Comparing markets

Select several markets and open the comparison. You get the same measures for each, side by side: position, visibility, score, coverage, Top 10 placements, volatility and sponsored presence.

This is the portfolio view. It answers where to spend your attention — which of your products is losing ground, which is stable enough to ignore this week. It does not answer why, because markets have different keywords and different competitors; two markets' average positions are not really the same measurement.

Treat the comparison as a ranking of where to look, not as a scoreboard.

Comparing two products head to head

Inside a market, put two products side by side — yours against a competitor, or two competitors against each other. You get their positions keyword by keyword rather than in aggregate.

This is the diagnostic view. "They are ahead of us overall" becomes "they are ahead on these six terms and behind on those four", which is something you can act on.

Which to use

Start wide and narrow down. The dashboard says something changed, the market comparison says in which market, the Market Recorder says who moved, and the head-to-head says on which searches.

Going in the other direction — starting from one keyword and reasoning outwards — is how you end up explaining a market with an anecdote.
