Which competitors you track
Everyone who shows up on your keywords at first, then the products that actually compete with you — selected by how visible they are, not by how often they appear.
You never pick competitors by hand. JustRanks derives them from the search results, and the set changes as the market becomes clearer.
The first days: everything
For the first few days a new market tracks every product that appears on any of your keywords. This is deliberate. Before there is history, there is no basis for deciding who matters, and a competitor missed at the start would be missing from every comparison later.
Afterwards: the products that matter
Once there is enough history, the field narrows. Competitors are ranked by visibility across your keywords — how high they rank, on how many of your terms, weighted so that a first place counts far more than a place deep down the page. The ranking uses a recent window rather than all time, so a seller who was strong last quarter but is not any more drops out of the set. The strongest are kept and tracked in detail: their price, rating, reviews, Best Sellers Rank and badges are captured daily alongside their positions.
Two rules protect the set from noise:
- A product that drops out is not removed immediately. It keeps its place for a few more days, so a single bad week does not erase its history.
- Your own variants are never counted as competitors. A sibling of your ASIN is your product under another name, not a rival. See Variants and product families.
Why not simply the top 10
Because the interesting movement is rarely in the top 10. A product climbing from 30 to 15 is the one worth knowing about — by the time it reaches the top 10 it is no longer news. Tracking well beyond the visible page is what makes a rising competitor visible before they arrive.
What you can influence
You cannot add a competitor directly, but you control the input: the competitor set follows the keywords. If a rival you care about is not being tracked, it is because they do not rank on the terms you chose. Adding the keywords they win on brings them into the market.
